Safe Overnight Parking Checklist

Sometimes plans change, weather delays happen, or you simply need a place to rest before continuing your journey. A good night’s sleep is important, and choosing a safe overnight location can help make travel less stressful.

Before You Stop

☐ Determine whether overnight parking is permitted.

☐ Observe posted signs and restrictions.

☐ Have one or two backup locations in mind.

☐ Trust your instincts if something feels wrong.

Choose Your Location Carefully

☐ Park where you are not blocking traffic or businesses.

☐ Avoid isolated areas that make you uncomfortable.

☐ Consider lighting, noise, and surroundings.

☐ Look for level ground when possible.

☐ Make sure you can leave easily if needed.

Be Respectful

☐ Keep noise to a minimum.

☐ Avoid setting out chairs, grills, or outdoor equipment.

☐ Keep your stay low profile.

☐ Leave the area clean.

☐ Support local businesses whenever possible.

Personal Safety

☐ Lock doors if that is your normal practice.

☐ Keep keys and phones within easy reach.

☐ Know where you are located.

☐ Share your location with trusted family or friends if desired.

☐ Keep flashlights available.

Pets and Comfort

☐ Make sure pets have water and ventilation.

☐ Prepare any nighttime medications or medical equipment.

☐ Confirm batteries, oxygen concentrators, CPAP machines, or other essential devices are ready.

☐ Set alarms if you need an early departure.

Remember

☐ Rested drivers are safer drivers.

☐ It is okay to change locations if you do not feel comfortable.

☐ There is no prize for enduring a bad situation.

☐ A peaceful night’s rest is worth the extra effort to find the right spot.

Experienced travelers understand that safety and courtesy go hand in hand. Leaving quietly and respectfully helps preserve opportunities for everyone who follows.
