Hot Weather Safety Checklist

Hot weather can become dangerous quickly, especially for older adults, children, pets, and those with medical conditions. Planning ahead and paying attention to changing conditions can help prevent emergencies.

Before the Heat Builds

☐ Check weather forecasts and temperatures.

☐ Fill water containers and drinking bottles.

☐ Verify fans, air conditioners, and cooling devices are working and charged if necessary.

☐ Ensure solar systems and batteries are charging properly.

☐ Keep medications stored according to instructions.

☐ Make plans for shade during the hottest part of the day.

Stay Hydrated

☐ Drink water regularly, even if you are not thirsty.

☐ Limit alcohol and excessive caffeine.

☐ Monitor signs of dehydration.

☐ Keep extra drinking water available.

Protect Yourself

☐ Wear light-colored clothing.

☐ Use hats and sun protection.

☐ Schedule outdoor activities during cooler hours.

☐ Take breaks and avoid overexertion.

☐ Watch for dizziness, weakness, confusion, or nausea.

Protect Pets

☐ Keep plenty of fresh water available.

☐ Provide shade throughout the day.

☐ Never leave pets inside a hot vehicle. Use fans if available and open windows.

☐ Watch for excessive panting or unusual behavior.

☐ Protect paws from hot surfaces.

Vehicle and Equipment

☐ Monitor tire pressures, especially during extreme heat.

☐ Watch engine temperatures.

☐ Verify coolant levels when appropriate.

☐ Protect electronics from direct sunlight.

☐ Ensure generators and fuel containers are used safely.

Have a Backup Plan

☐ Know where the nearest town, cooling center, or air-conditioned building is located.

☐ Keep emergency contact information available.

☐ Be willing to move if conditions become unsafe.

☐ Remember that there is no shame in seeking cooler temperatures.

Remember

☐ Heat exhaustion can become heat stroke.

☐ Rest when needed.

☐ Listen to your body.

☐ Your health is more important than keeping your original plans.

Experienced travelers know that sometimes the smartest move is simply moving to higher elevation or cooler weather. Flexibility is one of the greatest tools a traveler has.
